The meeting Pavilion

As part of the commemoration of the fall of the Great Tenochtitlán back in 13th August, 1521, the Arts and Culture department of the Centro Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego has developed “El Pabellón del Encuentro”, a virtual-reality immersive experience that will take you back in time. Based on historical facts, this experience is looking to excite and introduce the audience to the grandeur of that great ancient city, bringing out the deep changes the Spanish brought with them.

It all starts at the Zócalo of Mexico City, where the Sacred Precinct of the Great Tenochtitlán  used to be (1521). From there, in 1519, you will go through the Villa Rica beach on board Hernán Cortes’s ship, where you will witness the meeting between the Spanish conqueror and the mexica tlatoani, Moctezuma Xocoyotzin. Finally, you will behold the fall of Tenochtitlán. You will be able to live this experience by means of virtual reality glasses and technology, through 3D models of places, codes, and works of art, being part of both meaningful places and events related to the fall of Tenochtitlán.

What’s more, the trip has 360° videos of the Zócalo and the sound art piece, 1521, which aims to highlight the importance of languages in those ages. This piece captures the diversity of mesoamerican languages (such as ralámuli, zapoteco, mixteco, tepehua, mixe, tzotzil, náhuatl, chichimeco, otomí, mazahua, seri, and Spanish ) as well as their clash with Castilian Spanish and the wide range of new sounds it entailed.

El Pabellón del Encuentro is based on dualism –which is not a new concept in our culture–  mixing design and architecture, which makes it a meeting place between the past and the future of our country. It is also a tribute to the geometry and magnificence of pre-Columbian architecture; this is complemented and contrasted both with the rationality and the orthogonality of colonial architecture.

The Arts and Culture department of the Centro Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego, in collaboration with the architectural firm, C Cúbica Arquitectos, and the audiovisual content producer, Dopamine, are in charge of the event. The structure, which was part of the Design Week México 2021, is located at the National Anthropology Museum, and will be available from 24th May to 28th August, 2022.
