FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND DESIGN

17TH BICM, FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND DESIGN

With over 30 years of history, the International Poster Biennial in Mexico is a project with the mission to promote graphic design and to keep the memory of posters in Mexico.

However, committed to education as we are, not only are we consolidating this initiative as a linking platform for creators, we have also decided to organize an event that will allow us to bring talents of great significance to share their knowledge with Mexico.

What in 1991 was born as the First International Workshop, in 1996 it grew into the First Designers Meeting in Aguascalientes. Two years later, it turned into the International Meeting of Graphic Design in Xalapa, until the First Festival of Arts and Design was born in 2004, and it also took place in Xalapa.

This year, from September 20th to November 3rd, the 17th BICM, Festival of Arts and Design, will be carried out both in Mexico City and in Xalapa, Veracruz, with a program that includes book presentations, film exhibitions, video mapping and animation, artistic activities, exhibitions, workshops, and conferences.

The program will begin with two exhibitions; in Mexico City:

México – Taiwán, A Friendly Hug, at the Ramón López Velarde Gallery in Casa del Poeta, in Mexico City, on September 20th.

While in Xalapa, Veracruz:

The Persistence of the Sentient Machine. A Tribute to Ariel Prize-winning Films, at the AP Gallery of the School of Plastic Arts of the UV (University of Veracruz, for its acronym in Spanish), on September 22nd.

After these, we will continue with a number of openings in Xalapa City, including the exhibition Música y Diseño. Carteles en Suiza, which will show at the Casa Doña Falla, Music of Veracruz Museum. This collection brings Swiss talents together in a tour across the recent history of their poster design.

On October 26th, we will have three great events at the House of Time of the UAM (Metropolitan Autonomous University, for its acronym in Spanish): on one hand, the ceremony for the Medal of Excellence “José Guadalupe Posada” to Santiago Pol; later, the presentation of the book, El Cartel, with its authors, Joan Costa and Santiago Pol. After that, the opening of the In Memoriam Vicente Rojo exhibition, paying tribute to an author with one of the most significant legacies for arts and design in Mexico.

The next day, October 27th, workshops and seminars will be carried out at different UAM academic units. Meanwhile, in the afternoon, the New Languages in German Posters exhibition will open at the Chancellery Museum. In the evening, we will enjoy one of our most important events in the whole program: the opening of the finalists’ exhibition and award ceremony of the 17BICM, at the Franz Meyer Museum.

On October 28th, the program in Mexico City will close with its best. We will have the first series of conferences, where Apex Lin, Paula Barragán, Angelina Lippert, and Ken Cato will speak.

On October 29th, the activity program for Xalapa City, Veracruz, will start with a concert. Thus, from October 30th to November 2nd, we will present the conferences of Santiago Pol, Klaus Welp, Götz Gramlich, Elżbieta Chojna, Apex Lin, Ken Cato, Chi Mei Chang, Jean Michel Geridan, Lech Majewski, Eric Boelts, Daniel Caja Rubio, and Nicolas Brault.
